Rapidly Expanding Glacial Lakes in Nepal Himalaya

چکیده
The retreat and shrinkage of glaciers due to climate change are the causes for formation expansion glacial lakes in Himalayas. This study presents rapidly expanding Nepal Himalayas between 1988 2018 based on published lake inventories produced from Landsat imageries (30 m). Glacier-fed end moraine-dammed whose surface area was?0.1 km2 with an rate more than 30% 1988-2018 were regarded as lakes. results show that 19 heterogeneously distributed different sub-basins Nepal. Among sub-basins, Dudh Koshi sub-basin has a maximum (5) number total these expanded by ~133%, 4.12±0.61 9.62±1.04 2018. Regular monitoring is required because rapid heightens risk GLOF developing potential flood volume can reach sites possible avalanches.

Identification of Hazard and Risk for Glacial Lakes in the Nepal Himalaya Using Satellite Imagery from 2000-2015
Glacial lakes in the Nepal Himalaya can threaten downstream communities and have large socio-economic consequences if an outburst flood occurs. This study identified 131 glacial lakes in Nepal in 2015 that are greater than 0.1 km2 and performed a first-pass hazard and risk assessment for each lake. The hazard assessment included mass entering the lake, the moraine stability, and how lake expans...
متن کاملRemote sensing-based hazard assessment of glacial lakes in Sikkim Himalaya
Glacial lake is a water body formed in/under/besides and/or in front of a glacier due to glacial dynamics. Such high-altitude glacial lakes are hazardous to humanity and infrastructure as they can drain instantaneous and create devastating floods in the downstream. The formation of moraine-dammed glacial lakes and glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) is major concern in countries such as Bhutan, ...

BACKGROUND Indigenous knowledge has become recognized worldwide not only because of its intrinsic value but also because it has a potential instrumental value to science and conservation. In Nepal, the indigenous knowledge of useful and medicinal plants has roots in the remote past. METHODS The present study reviews the indigenous knowledge and use of plant resources of the Nepal Himalayas al...
متن کاملSpatial Database Development of Glaciers and Glacial Lakes in the Identification of Potentially Dangerous Glacial Lakes of Nepal Using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems
Spatial and attribute database of the glaciers and glacial lakes of whole Nepal had developed by ICIMOD in collaboration with UNEP/RRC-AP in 2001 using remote sensing and geographic information systems techniques. There are altogether 3,252 glaciers covering an area of 5,322 square kilometer with approximately 481 km of ice reserves. The Mahakali River basin comprises 87 glaciers with an area o...
متن کاملPerformance of ASTER and SRTM DEMs, and their potential for assessing glacial lakes in the Lunana region, Bhutan Himalaya
To assess the potential volume of a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) more precisely than in previous studies, we analyze ground survey data and remote-sensing digital elevation models (DEMs) around glacial lakes in the Lunana region, Bhutan. Based on a DEM generated from differential GPS ground surveys, we first evaluate the relative accuracies of DEMs produced by the Advanced Spaceborne Ther...
